Tbilisi Metro train fleet modernization project started at the end of 2005 to equip the carriages with modern systems and increase the quality of safety and comfort to passengers. Carriages are modernized in Tbilisi Train Repair Plant located on the territory owned by Metro in Tbilisi. At the end of 2006, there were 31 modernized carriages already to serve passengers. In 2005-2006, Tbilisi Mayor's Office allocated 14 mln Lari to finance the project.
 
In 2007 trains depot of the “Tbilisi Metro” was added 21 modernized trams; finances for modernization of the trams – 9,5 million GEL on that stage – was assigned from the budget if the capital. Totally amount of modernized trams in 2005-2007 reached to 52 units, which consequently amounts to 50% of trains, moving on “Akhmeteli-Varketili” line. The first stage of trains` modernization was completed with this; the mentioned stage envisaged renovation of 52 units of “EJ-3” type trams (wagons)..
 
Since 2008 the second stage of modernization of tube stock park of “Tbilisi Metro” was initiated; the stage envisages modernization of the rest 114 trams – “81-714/717” type. The mentioned project is financed from Tbilisi city local budget and completion of it is considered for 2010; consequently “Tbilisi Metro” will be able to serve to the passengers of the capital with completely renovated train depot. |
